Renovating in New Jersey's Capital#
Trenton carries a housing stock unlike any other city in Mercer County. Victorian row homes in Mill Hill. Early-American colonials in Hiltonia. Pre-war two-families in Chambersburg. Mid-rise multifamily buildings along West State Street. Whether you're restoring a historic brownstone or modernizing a residential investment property, Trenton renovations demand expertise beyond standard suburban remodeling.
The 5th Wall is based in Lawrence — just eight minutes from downtown Trenton — and Trenton has been part of our core service area since we opened. We understand the unique challenges that come with pre-war construction: plaster walls, knob-and-tube wiring, galvanized plumbing, cast-iron drain stacks, and century-old framing that doesn't match modern dimensions. We also understand NJ's lead-safe work practices, asbestos awareness requirements, and the historic-district review process that some Trenton neighborhoods require.

Trenton Neighborhoods We Serve#
Mill Hill & Hanover Academy — Historic District Work#
Mill Hill is Trenton's most prominent historic district, featuring Victorian row homes, Italianate townhouses, and Federal-era masonry structures dating from the 1840s through the early 1900s. Homes here often need behind-the-scenes modernization — updated electrical panels, PEX plumbing replacing galvanized, new HVAC systems — while preserving original architectural details. Exterior changes within the historic district require design review, which we navigate routinely.
Chambersburg & Villa Park — Working-Class Row Homes#
The Chambersburg neighborhood is one of Trenton's most densely built areas, with row homes and two-family houses on narrow lots. Renovation projects here typically focus on kitchen modernization, single-bathroom expansions (many Chambersburg homes were built with one bathroom), and basement finishing. Tight party walls mean sound isolation matters.
Hiltonia & Berkeley Square — Single-Family Colonials#
Hiltonia and Berkeley Square feature single-family colonials and Tudors on larger lots, many dating from the 1920s through the 1940s. These are strong renovation candidates — solid construction, good bones, but 80-100 year old kitchens, bathrooms, and mechanical systems that are well past replacement age.
Ewing-Trenton Border & West State Street — Multi-Family Investment#
Many Trenton renovation projects involve investor-owned two-families and small multi-family buildings. We handle these with the same quality we bring to owner-occupied work — new kitchens that attract quality tenants, bathrooms that meet code, and electrical/plumbing upgrades that pass rental inspections.
What We Build in Trenton#
Kitchen Remodeling — Typical Budget: $22,000-$55,000#
Most Trenton kitchens are compact (8x10 feet is common in pre-war homes). Our most-requested kitchen project here is a thoughtful gut-renovation that modernizes the space without losing the historic character — refinished original hardwood floors, period-appropriate cabinetry, subway tile, and modern appliances sized for older layouts.
Bathroom Remodeling — Typical Budget: $12,000-$28,000#
Trenton bathrooms often need full gut-renovations. Proper waterproofing is critical because most pre-war bathrooms were built before modern moisture standards. We install Schluter systems on every tile installation.
Basement Finishing — Typical Budget: $25,000-$55,000#
Trenton basements present unique challenges — older foundations, potential moisture issues, low ceiling heights. We assess each basement before committing to finishing and include egress window installation when required by code.
Roofing & Siding#
Most Trenton homes are 80-130 years old with roofs that have been replaced multiple times. We handle full tear-offs, flat-roof systems for the flat-top row homes in Chambersburg, and vinyl or fiber-cement siding replacement.
Whole-Home Renovations#
Trenton's revitalization wave has created real demand for full-scope renovation of historic homes. We manage these projects end-to-end — demolition, structural, rough-ins, finishes, cleanup.
